The Istanbul Marathon holds a special place in running — it is the only marathon in the world that crosses two continents. Runners start on the Asian side of the city near Altunizade and cross the iconic 15 July Martyrs Bridge (formerly Bosphorus Bridge) into Europe, finishing in the historic Sultanahmet district. The Venue: Bosphorus Bridge to Sultanahmet

The race starts at Altunizade on the Asian side and the highlight comes early — the crossing of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge over the Bosphorus, with sweeping views of the waterway, the city's minarets, and passing ships below. The course then runs through European Istanbul past Dolmabahce Palace, Taksim, and along the Golden Horn before finishing in the shadow of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia at Sultanahmet Square.

From Istanbul Airport (IST)

Istanbul Airport is a massive modern hub located about 40 km northwest of the city centre, on the European side.

The Havaist airport bus is the most affordable and reliable option. Services run 24/7 and drop you in central Istanbul. For groups of 2–3, a taxi works out similarly priced per person and is more convenient.

Public Transport

Istanbul has an extensive public transport network including the metro, tram, funicular, ferries, and buses. The T1 tramway is the most useful line for tourists — it runs from Kabatas through Sultanahmet to Eminonu. The Istanbulkart is essential.

Buy an Istanbulkart at the airport or any metro station — it works on all public transport (metro, tram, bus, ferry) and offers significant discounts over single tickets.

Currency. Turkish Lira (TRY / ₺).

Cash vs card. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants, shops, and hotels. Carry some cash for street food vendors, simits, and smaller shops. ATMs are plentiful.

Tipping. 5–10% at restaurants is customary. Round up for taxi rides. Tip ₺20–50 at hammams (Turkish baths).
