Runners start on the Asian side of the city near Altunizade and cross the iconic 15 July Martyrs Bridge (formerly Bosphorus Bridge) into Europe, finishing in the historic Sultanahmet district. Late October in Istanbul brings mild autumn weather. Expect temperatures of 10–18°C (50–64°F) with partly cloudy skies and a chance of rain — excellent conditions for marathon running, though a light layer is wise for the early start.
The Venue: Bosphorus Bridge to Sultanahmet
The race starts at Altunizade on the Asian side and the highlight comes early — the crossing of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge over the Bosphorus, with sweeping views of the waterway, the city's minarets, and passing ships below. The course then runs through European Istanbul past Dolmabahce Palace, Taksim, and along the Golden Horn before finishing in the shadow of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia at Sultanahmet Square.

Important: Because the start is on the Asian side and the finish on the European side, you cannot easily return to the start. Arrange to have all your belongings transported to the finish, or leave everything at your hotel on the European side.
Race Expo
The Istanbul Marathon Expo is typically held at Kanyon AVM or designated expo venue in Levent, in the Levent business district on the European side. You must collect your race bib and timing chip at the Expo before race day.
When to visit: The Expo usually runs Friday and Saturday before the race. Friday is less crowded. Allow at least an hour for bib collection and browsing.
What to bring: Your registration confirmation email and a valid photo ID.
Getting there: Levent (Metro M2).
Where to Stay
Sultanahmet (the Old City) is the ideal area to stay — you'll be steps from the finish line and surrounded by Istanbul's greatest monuments. Beyoglu/Taksim is another excellent option with more nightlife, restaurants, and a cosmopolitan vibe. Both are on the European side, which is where the finish line and most tourist attractions are located.

From Istanbul Airport (IST)
Istanbul Airport is a massive modern hub located about 40 km northwest of the city centre, on the European side.

The Havaist airport bus is the most affordable and reliable option. Services run 24/7 and drop you in central Istanbul. For groups of 2–3, a taxi works out similarly priced per person and is more convenient.
From Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW)
Sabiha Gokcen is Istanbul's second airport, located on the Asian side about 55 km southeast of Sultanahmet. Many budget carriers use this airport.

The Havaist shuttle bus is the most practical option. From Taksim, take the funicular and tram to reach Sultanahmet and the finish area.
Public Transport
Istanbul has an extensive public transport network including the metro, tram, funicular, ferries, and buses. The T1 tramway is the most useful line for tourists — it runs from Kabatas through Sultanahmet to Eminonu. The Istanbulkart is essential.

Where to Eat
Karakoy / Galata — A trendy waterfront neighbourhood between the Galata Bridge and Galata Tower, packed with meyhanes (Turkish taverns), modern bistros, and seafood restaurants. This is Istanbul's hottest dining scene.
Sultanahmet / Eminonu — The Old City has tourist-friendly restaurants plus authentic local gems. The area around the Spice Bazaar and Eminonu waterfront is famous for balik ekmek (fish sandwiches).

Currency. Turkish Lira (TRY / ₺).
Cash vs card. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants, shops, and hotels. Carry some cash for street food vendors, simits, and smaller shops. ATMs are plentiful.
Tipping. 5–10% at restaurants is customary. Round up for taxi rides. Tip ₺20–50 at hammams (Turkish baths).
Language. Turkish is the primary language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants in Sultanahmet, Taksim, and Beyoglu. Less common in residential neighbourhoods.
